Friday was a slightly unusual working day. Office work was somewhat demanding, but an unexpected change in the office schedule gave me a few additional hours to study.
I used that time to work on my pending Compiler Design notes. I also managed to complete three DBMS lectures during my commute.
However, with October coming to an end, the pressure of completing my monthly targets is becoming increasingly noticeable.
Let's get into the details.
An Unusual Friday at the Office
Friday's office work was a bit tougher than usual.
My manager was on sick leave, and my team lead had also planned to leave early. Although my lead assigned me quite a bit of work, I managed to complete my tasks earlier than expected.
Since I was free to leave, I also decided to head home early.
I got approximately three hours of additional time compared with my usual office schedule.
Now, unexpected free time during a working day is something I certainly don't want to waste, especially when October's targets are waiting to be completed.
So, I used that extra time for my GATE preparation.
Completing Compiler Design Notes
After completing the entire Compiler Design lecture syllabus earlier, I had started working on the pending notes.
My focus on Friday was primarily on completing the notes for the first two chapters.
Chapter 1: Lexical Analysis and Syntax Analysis
I completed the notes for the entire first chapter.
The Syntax Analysis portion required documenting several parsing techniques, including:
- LL(1)
- LR(0)
- SLR(1)
- CLR
- LALR
I also prepared notes covering parsing table construction and the related concepts.
These are important topics in Compiler Design, and I wanted to have the procedures and concepts properly documented so that revising them later wouldn't become unnecessarily difficult.
With this, Chapter 1 notes were finally completed.
Chapter 2: Syntax-Directed Translation
After finishing the first chapter, I moved on to the second chapter, Syntax-Directed Translation (SDT).
I worked on its notes as well and managed to complete them.
So, by the end of the day, I had completed the notes for two Compiler Design chapters.
The third chapter, Code Generation and Code Optimization, is still pending.
Although the lecture syllabus is already complete, the note-making work is taking additional time. But I don't want to consider a subject completely prepared just because I've watched all its lectures.
There is a difference between watching lectures and having material ready for revision.
And I'm trying to keep that distinction in mind.
Three DBMS Lectures During My Commute!
Here's another interesting part of Friday.
While travelling from office to home, I completed three DBMS lectures.
These lectures covered the Query Language chapter, which is the fourth chapter of my DBMS preparation.
With those three lectures completed, DBMS Chapter 4: Query Language was finished!
I was glad I could use my commuting time productively.
It also reminded me that preparation doesn't always have to happen while sitting at a desk with a laptop or notebook.
Sometimes, even the time spent travelling can be useful.
The October 31 Deadline Is Approaching
Now comes the part that is causing some pressure.
My October target was to complete the entire DBMS subject by October 31.
The good news is that I've completed all the DBMS lectures.
However, my concern is not just about completing the lectures.
I also need to complete the notes.
And that's where things are becoming difficult.
I don't think I'll be able to complete everything, including the notes, by the October 31 deadline.
I could simply rush through the remaining work and mark the subject as completed, but that isn't what I want.
For me, completing a subject means having the concepts covered and the notes ready for future revision.
There's no point pretending that everything is complete when I know there's still work left.
So, I'll try to get as close as possible to the target on Saturday, the final day of October.
Day 47: A Productive Day Despite the Pressure
Friday wasn't perfect, but it was productive.
I managed to complete two chapters of Compiler Design notes, finish three DBMS lectures during my commute and make use of the additional time I got because of the office schedule.
At the same time, I'm feeling the pressure of the October deadline.
The Compiler Design lecture syllabus is complete, but its notes are still partially pending. DBMS lectures are also complete, but the notes require additional attention.
One thing I've started realising during this preparation is that finishing lectures is only one part of the process.
The actual challenge is to organise everything well enough that revision becomes possible later.
Tomorrow is the final day of October.
I may or may not achieve everything I initially planned, but I'll try to make the best use of the remaining time.
For now, Day 47 is complete.
One more working day, one more day of preparation, and one step closer to GATE CSE 2027.
What do you think?
Studying for GATE is less lonely when we're all figuring it out together.
