The gap between knowing and recalling under pressure

I can explain deadlock detection to a friend without notes. Put the same question in front of me with a countdown timer running, and for a few seconds it's like the information was never there. That gap between knowing something and being able to recall it under a clock turned out to be its own separate skill, one I hadn't actually practiced at all.

What made it worse

Studying almost exclusively in untimed, quiet conditions. My brain got very good at recalling things slowly and comfortably, which is exactly the one condition the actual exam will never offer.

What's actually helped

Taking timed PYQ sets far earlier than felt comfortable, even when I knew I wasn't "ready." The blank-mind feeling shows up less the more familiar timed pressure itself becomes, separate from how well I know the content.

Where I still struggle

First ten minutes of any mock, still. I've started treating those ten minutes as a warm-up I expect to be slightly shaky, instead of a sign that something's wrong — that alone took some of the panic out of it.
